Another Rio questions Man Utd’s move for De Ligt

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has become the latest to question the club’s interest in signing Matthijs de Ligt.

The latest reports suggest that the Red Devils have reached an agreement with Bayern Munich to bring in both De Ligt and Noussair Masraoui. With Rio fearing that De Ligt could end up like Juventus and the Bavarians.

“Mazraoui will play at right-back. Because Wan-Bissaka is being sold. I think it’s a good deal overall. I also think Dalot will play before him,” Rio told RioAcs.

“But with De Ligt… I watched him at Ajax, he was brilliant that year when he got to the Champions League semi-final with Ten Hag and lost to Spurs, he dictated the game, everything you want in a defender – focus.”

“Then he went to Juventus, you look at him and you think it’s a great move, he’s going to learn from Bonucci and Chiellini and everyone, but it’s a disappointment for me that his career is starting to decline.”

“I think he started 16 games last season. He’s had a lot of injury problems. He hasn’t started as many games in the last two or three years and Manchester United have spent £45-50m on him and he’s been a substitute for the last two teams.”

“I think it’s too much for him, with huge pressure, huge opportunity but also a lot of uncertainty after his time at Juventus and Bayern Munich – Ten Hag knows him well both as a character and as an individual. I wish him well but I will reserve judgment.”

They will play but now Yoro is out for three months. Eric Dier started before him because he was surplus to requirements at Spurs. That tells you a lot.”

“This signing is not something that makes me go ‘wow’. Hopefully Ten Hag can get the best out of him.”
